Adding alt text to images in WordPress is a straightforward process. Alt text (short for “alternative text”) provides a description of an image for accessibility purposes and is also used when an image cannot be displayed. Here’s how you can add alt text to images in WordPress:
- Upload or Select an Image:
- When you’re editing a post or page in the WordPress block editor (Gutenberg), click on the “+” icon to add a new block.
- Choose the “Image” block or the “Media & Text” block if you want to add an image alongside text.
- Upload or Select an Image:
- If you’re uploading a new image, click on the “Upload” button to select an image from your computer. If you’ve already uploaded the image, click on the “Media Library” tab to choose an existing image.
- Add or Edit Alt Text:
- Once the image is added to your post or page, click on the image block to select it.
- In the block settings on the right sidebar, you’ll see an option called “Alt Text” or “Image settings.” Click on it to expand the section.
- Enter Alt Text:
- In the “Alt Text” field, provide a concise and descriptive alternative text for the image. This text should convey the content and purpose of the image to someone who cannot see it.
- Update or Publish:
- After entering the alt text, make sure to click the “Update” button if you’re editing an existing post/page or “Publish” if you’re creating a new one.
It’s important to note that adding alt text is not just for accessibility; it also benefits SEO (Search Engine Optimization) by providing search engines with context about your images.
Here are a few additional tips for writing effective alt text:
- Keep it concise but descriptive.
- If an image is purely decorative and conveys no meaningful content, you can leave the alt text empty or use a null alt attribute (alt=””).
- Avoid using phrases like “image of” or “picture of” in the alt text unless it’s necessary for context.
- Use proper spelling and grammar in your alt text.
By following these steps and best practices, you can ensure that your images are accessible and provide valuable information to all users, including those who rely on screen readers or encounter images with loading issues.
